Charger Plate
Charger Plate: A large decorative plate placed under the dinner plate as a base.
A charger plate (sometimes called an under-plate or service plate) is a large decorative plate — usually 12 to 14 inches — placed at each setting before guests arrive. The dinner plate is set on top of the charger. Chargers add visual layering and protect the linen. They may be removed before the entrée course or kept as a base throughout the meal — practice varies by venue and caterer.
